Patriots and Tea: Newport and the American Revolution with author James Fichter
After the Boston Tea Party and the Coercive Acts, Patriots urged a boycott of tea, and the Continental Congress prohibited the drink. Sometimes we imagine this is when Americans turned from tea to coffee. But how did this work in Newport, a town known for its smuggling ways? This talk examines the Boston Tea Party and its after-effects in Newport, the ways Newport Patriots tried to make abstaining from tea a symbol, and the ways that Newport’s tea-runners evaded the Congressional Prohibition on tea to continue to sell the drink to a willing public. In the end it was Congress, not Newport’s merchants, who gave the people what they wanted. Congress conceded defeat and repealed its ban on te...

He’s one of my great grandfathers through my father side
Wonderful interview.
Did this while camping, worked pretty good
I have heard Anderson talk about the both the Cooper and Vanderbilt Families before, it was so great to hear from his cousin on about her recollections…
You often see paintings of americans wearing scarfs, i doubt this was normal?
whoooooooooooooooaaa...did you say we got our weapons from France? We couldn't even make our own frickin' muskets HERE in our own country? This is outrageous!!!! Was ANYTHING made here ever?
You should be ashamed of doing this with masks on like sheep🙄
Wow incredible story! I feel very privileged to be able to hear this talk. Thank you, I just bought the book online. When I think about the many examples you give for “crime of the century” I also thought about the Thaw, White, Nesbit affair that took place in New York, culminating when White was assassinated in his own Madison Square Garden in 1906.
So fresh! So clean.
Thanks for all your hard work and passion, Trudy!! I look forward to your email each day!! 🫶🌹
I couldn't take the time to watch this but I will say the British military expenditure to defend/protect the colonies was huge. With France, (remember Spain still held Florida) vying for empire and constantly at war with Britain around the world + native hostilities and alliances at the frontiers, pirates corsairs elsewhere.... what a load.
Newport not Wales
I'm making my way carefully through The War of the Revolution, by Christopher Ward (d. 1943). After each battle, I look for RUclips videos for reinforcement. This video is one of the best. The illustrations of the boats and the consistent use of the map are very helpful . The narration is concise but thorough, clear, and vivid. Thank you so much.
Please don't forget the Anchor trade its Rhode Islands first major business in 1700 by John Green the Anchors were built in Warwick and sailed on Barge. To newport the anchors ranged from seven hundred pounds to two thousand pounds and Rhode island Adopted the anchor symbol as their state seal.
So glad they found Cowry shells in the floor boards of the attic Hoping more history is unearthed !!
I really enjoyed this presentation.

I wish this showed wig making instead of wig styling.
It was an absolute pleasure attending this marvelous event last year! All of the historic interpreters were remarkable, and each individual was a charming wellspring of information. Delighted to see the new video, and looking forward to attending in beautiful Newport. Thank you for all that you do bringing history to life, cheers!
Have you any history on the Ivy Lodge? My former boss bought it with his wife as a bed and breakfast.
This is a cool commercial! I’d really love to go based solely on this commercial, unfortunately I live over 1,000 miles away 😅
Only 240 views? This is very underrated, it looked like everyone was having so much fun doing it!
wish i could attend!
🍻
I love this, the voice of the kindest man I ever knew! What a shock to hear this!
Those must be Arthur Newell's clocks.
@@educationalfieldstudies The Westminster clock is with my Mom. The ship's clock (which was always his) is with my brother. How are you? Do you even remember us?
This is my Grandfather!
There's no way.
I read Richard Potter's biography, a very good book on an amazing American.
A lot of people who inherit money always think it will always be there so they live beyond their means. “Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in 3 generations.” is the saying
Did I miss the introduction of who Ms. Szapary is ? I know only that they are cousins but we just assume that she is also a Vanderbilt ?
What a treat. Living history. Thank you for sharing.
Love that navy blue jacket!
I am impressed! You actually know your history! One of my 12th great grandfathers, John Pease was one of the first people in 1638.
“Land belongs to the natives unless it’s sold [for 3 glass beads and a flint lock]”
Adam Hodges-LeClaire is a incredible living historian. Top notch.
The American Golden Age is over!
Gilded.
@@cindymaceda2999 Whatever! I am not American
@@DennisFreitas-bn7nhThere was a distinction between Golden and Gilded because that era was named Gilded due to the “robber barons” making unbelievable fortunes on the backs of child labour, 16-hour workdays, 6-day workweeks with no unions to fight for health insurance or education or good housing. So the Vanderbilts, Astors, Rockefellers lived in mansions with lots of gilding but they were considered new-rich. JP Morgan was said to be the most hated man in America.
@@DennisFreitas-bn7nhIf you get the chance, view “The Gilded Age” mini-series (HBO) with a wonderful & humorous screenplay by Oscar-winner Julian Fellowes. It is a thinly-veiled re-telling of the rivalry between the Astors and Vanderbilts. It shows the inequality of the classes and the rise of changes in labour laws.
I love History. I lived in Providencie R.I. for 3 years.

Hope this can reach Matthew in some way. He got a photo of the wrong coat from the swedish army museum. The one he shows are the 1687 standard issue uniform for the swedish army, the four french coats he talks about are different coats 😶
Joshua Mason has exactly the face and body I would love to have as my own, too bad we can’t switch bodies
